Puff-Less Eye Exams From Our Optometrist in Spring, TX
Testing for glaucoma can be uncomfortable with a traditional test that uses a puff of air directed at the eye. With the puff-less exam we use at Today's Vision Rayford and Riley Fuzzel in Spring, TX, we can accurately exam you for early signs of glaucoma without the discomfort.
What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is not a single disease but a class of them that affect the optic nerve. The varieties of glaucoma do not cause symptoms in their early stages. However, if left untreated, glaucoma can steal sight, resulting in reduced visual acuity or blindness. This disease can develop and worsen over the years without you knowing until you have irreversible sight loss.
Why Does an Optometrist Test for Glaucoma?
The only way to detect glaucoma is through a vision exam from your optometrist. Several tests exist to test for this condition, but the most commonly used is the air puff test. This test sends a brief, intense puff of air into the eye to measure its pressure. Pressure changes, especially elevated levels, can indicate a developing problem in the eye. The air puff test has some problems, though. Patient discomfort and lower accuracy have convinced many eye doctors to leave behind the older technology in favor of the puff-less test.
What is a Puff-Less Vision Exam?
The puff-less vision test is painless and more accurate at determining your eyes' pressure. The most common form is the Goldmann applanation tonometer. This test is so trusted that the American Academy of Ophthalmology calls it the "gold standard" for measuring intraocular pressure. When you have a puff-less test, you will barely feel the device move past your eyelashes. The eye doctor will adjust the tonometer until it just touches your cornea while holding open your eyelids. After some adjustments to accurately measure your eye's pressure, the optometrist pulls the device away from your eye and tests the other eye. The entire process takes seconds per eye.
